How do you winterize a chlorine pool?
Note: Winterization procedures will vary depending on your region, your pool type, and your preferences for how to shut down your pool. Consult your dealer and/or builder about the proper way to store and winterize your equipment and the pool.
-
Select the appropriate Arctic Blue® Winter Kit(s) for your pool volume. Winter Kits winterize up to 12,000 gallons or up to 24,000 gallons.
-
IMPORTANT: If any problems exist, such as combined chlorine, cloudy water or algae growth, clear these up before performing a winter water analysis and beginning the closing procedures.
-
When the pool is clear, perform a winter closing analysis. Balancing parameters are slightly different for winter temperatures than for in-season. Balance according to the ALEX Pro recommendations for winter shut-down.
-
Do all housekeeping chores. Brush and vacuum. Clean the waterline with Off the Wall®. Cleaning the pool surfaces before shutting down the pool will help prevent permanent staining.
-
Clean out the skimmer baskets and the hair/lint trap. If the system will not be circulated, remove and store them.
-
Chemically clean the filter using Strip Kwik® and Kleen It®. Strip Kwik® is necessary to remove oil and grease from the filter. Kleen It® should be used if you have any possibility of scale buildup in the filter.
-
With the pump running, add the Arctic Blue® Shock from the Winter Kit(s) (1 lb. of Arctic Blue® Shock per 6,000 gallons). Wait one hour.
-
Add the Arctic Blue® Algae Protector from the kit(s) (16 oz. of Arctic Blue® Algae Protector per 12,000 gallons) around the edges.
-
Circulate 2-4 hours.
-
Winterize the equipment as the type of season demands. (In much colder climates, equipment may be removed and stored until spring.) Follow your dealer's recommendation for equipment winterization.
-
Drain the pool partially if recommended by the builder and install the winter cover.
In warmer climates, it may be necessary to add Arctic Blue® Shock and Arctic Blue® Algae Protector once more through the winter.
