Which type of pool filter is the most effective: sand, cartridge, or DE?

Swimming pool filters come in three main types: sand (using special-grade sand), cartridge (with paper or polyester elements), and DE (using diatomaceous earth). Each offers a unique method for trapping debris and contaminants.

Swimming pool filters are primarily categorized into three main types: sand, cartridge, and diatomaceous earth (DE) filters. Each type operates differently:

  1. Sand Filters: These use a bed of special-grade sand to filter out debris and impurities. As water passes through the sand bed, contaminants are trapped in the spaces between the sand particles. Over time, the accumulated debris can be removed through a process called backwashing.

  2. Cartridge Filters: These contain a paper or polyester cartridge that traps debris as water flows through it. When the cartridge becomes dirty, it's removed and cleaned, typically by hosing it down, and is then replaced.

  3. DE Filters: Diatomaceous earth is a natural substance made of fossilized remains of tiny aquatic organisms. DE filters use this substance to coat a set of grids inside the filter. The DE captures even the smallest contaminants, making it one of the most effective filtering systems available.
